From a young age living back home in Jamaica, my mom always had me help her in the kitchen. Being the eldest child, I was asked to step up and help out around the house and by the age of seven I was making breakfast and dinner for the family. I didn't know it as of yet, but this skill would be my breakthrough in life!
For a better life and undue circumstances, I went to live with my Aunt in Canada. I left behind my mother, sisters and everything that I knew to come to a place where I didn't exactly fit in. It took me awhile to adjust to a new culture and climate but my Aunt made sure I didn't forget where I came from. She taught me life lessons and how to grow up to become a lady. And just like my mother, she had me work in the kitchen. Oh how I loved the smell throughout the house around the holidays. Sweetbreads and yummy cakes would fill the air when we woke up, and that first drink of Sorrel would put a smile on our face. It wasn't exactly home, but it sure did smell like it. Though the transition was hard, it has changed my life and outcome dramatically!
After finishing high school, I didn't know what path to take. I had to think long and hard about what direction I wan to steer my life toward and after many discussions with family and friends, I decided to do the one thing I know I was good at, that came natural to me and I would figure out the rest later. I headed to George Brown College for Culinary Management. The culinary program taught me important chef skills and knife skills to sharpen and broaden my reach on different cuisines around the world. Even though cooking is what I excel at, I soon realized that baking was my true passion!
The feeling of making people happy through desserts and freshly baked goods is so rewarding. I want everyone to experience that feeling, especially around the holidays. It's hard to get everyone together these days, but to have loved ones gather around the table to share treats and delicious food brings back all the memories I had growing up. This is what motivates me, this is what we strive to accomplish as a company, a brand and in the community!
